As we honor the fallen of 9-11 in New York 25 years ago, there is also a prophetic Biblical feast. Sundown Friday September 11th is Yom Teruah, the Biblical day of trumpets or shouting. It marks the beginning of the Fall Feast of the LORD, Yehovah. In the Jewish calendar it is also observed and the New Year, Rosh Hashanah. Most Jews precede this date with a serious season of repentance.
Trumpets is followed on 9-20 by Day of Atonement focused on prayer, fasting, and repentance. Then five days later, on 9-25 at sundown to sundown 10-2, the great week long celebration of Tabernacles, or Sukkot begins. This is also called the Festival of Booths, remembering God’s protection in the wilderness and the harvest season. Finally the Feast season ends with Simchat Torah which in Hebrew means: “the joys of the Torah.” A new year of reading the Bible begins!
The Hebrew word teruah means a loud shout or trumpet blast and is associated throughout Scripture with movement, warning, battle, judgment, and rejoicing. Trumpets signaled Israel to move in the wilderness (Numbers 10), to advance at Jericho (Joshua 6), and to warn of the coming Day of YHWH:
“Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the LORD is coming, for it is at hand.”Joel 2:1
The trumpet is both a sound of alarm for the wicked and a sound of joy for the righteous. Prophetically, Scripture connects trumpet blasts with the future Day of the LORD, the return of Messiah, and the resurrection of the dead. 1 Corinthians 15).
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.”1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”1 Corinthians 15:51-52
Yom Teruah may therefore point forward to the coming judgment and ultimate victory of Messiah. It is a day to wake up, repent, prepare, and rejoice — because our King is coming!
